The Federation of African Journalists (FAJ) extends a happy Africa Day message to all affiliates, to Africans and to the Friends of Africa on this Africa Day; and calls on journalists and the media to play their part in the transformation of Africa.
Africa Day marks the formation of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) in 1963. As we commemorate the 55th anniversary the theme of the African Union this year is « Winning the fight against corruption : a sustainable path to Africa's transformation ».
FAJ believes that journalists and media can contribute to this endeavour through ethical journalism and investigative reporting. This entails a conducive environment for the safety of journalists and the access to information.
“We call on all African countries to adopt access to information legislations and to protect the safety of journalists in their work of reporting corruption” said Abdulwaheed Odusile, President of FAJ.
The FAJ reiterates the call to African Union to fast implement the Agenda 2063 for the Africa we want, and to allow journalists to operate freely as outlined by the African Union Declaration of principles on freedom of expression in Africa.
